On February 27, 2020, the students at FPCS Blow Pierce put on a black history month showcase. Each performance represented a different decade and the students highlighted important black history facts that happened during that era.

Martin Luther King Jr was born January 15, 1929 in Atlanta Georgia. He was a civil rights leader who protested in a nonviolent way. He wanted people to be treated fairly regardless of the color of their skin. Two things Martin Luther King Jr is well known for are his leadership in the Montgomery Bus Boycott and his famous speech “ I Have a Dream.

On Friday, February 28, 5th and 6th grade scholars at Woodridge International School held their first ever Black History Wax Museum. Students who volunteered to participate had to choose an African American icon, wrote a speech about their lives and accomplishments, memorized and finally performed it, in character, for their peers.

During the month of February, Friendship Public Charter School held the City-Wide Black History Quiz Bowl to celebrate Black History Month. The team of students who represented the Woodridge Eagles was very proud to make it to the finals and they did some impressive work to get there competing against other teams citywide.

On February 25, 2020, Mrs. Fatmata Zulu took her students on a tour of The National Great Blacks in Wax Museum in Baltimore to learn about black history. In the museum, students experienced African Americans’ struggles and successes.

On Monday, students had to dress up in their best 90’s looks. On Tuesday, students dressed up as their favorite African American icon or figure to celebrate Black History Month.

In honor of Black History Month, we read a book about an African American major fashion designer. She made fancy party gowns for rich and famous people. She wanted to prove that an African American can be a major dress designer. She was fighting for Civil Rights in her own way. Do you know who she is?

Throughout the entire month of February, which is also known as Black History Month, Friendship Tech Prep scholars and staff celebrated the entire month together. We had many different events, special lunches, and social media challenges.

February 14, 2018. We are finally a few days away From the hottest movie ever! This is one of the most anticipated movies because the superhero is actually black. And, this happens to be Black History Month, and so many kids are looking forward to seeing a hero that looks like them.

The movie Selma came out December 25, 2014. I saw this movie when I was in the 6th grade. I believe the actors worked really hard on this movie and from their performance, their hard work paid off. The actors’ performance was amazing.

The Armstrong Theatre Club had a play based on the famous civil rights legend, Martin Luther King, Jr., in the Armstrong Auditorium. They did this not only to recognize Dr. King but also to recognize other African-American icons from our history.

On February 28th, 2017, the 3rd graders at Friendship Chamberlain Academy dressed up as historic wax figures. Ms.Jenkin’s classroom was transformed into a wax museum. The kids made exhibits in Ms. Jenkin’s class to celebrate the lives of normal people who did great things.

For the month of February, our school Friendship Southeast Academy rocked our amazing Black History Month. Pre-school through 5th grade performed in different programs to celebrate. Each class in the school participated in the Black History Month Showcase. The overall theme of the school program was “We Are ROYALTY”.

This March, FNN wants to recognize some of the many women trailblazers in our history. One of these mountain movers is tennis legend, Serena Williams.

Oprah Winfrey is an African-American woman who is well known worldwide for starring in movies, creating and producing films, and OWN, which is her own TV network. Oprah Winfrey is an admirable person to African-Americans.

On Friday, February 17, 2017, the Woodridge staff and students celebrated HBCU Day! What does HBCU stand for? It stands for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. As a part of Black History Month, the day was filled with guest speakers who shared valuable information about attending a historically black college.

February 1, 2017. Black History Month began as Negro History Week which was created in 1926 by Carter G.Woodson. Carter G. Woodson was an African-American writer and historian known as the “Father Of Black History Month.” He also wrote an influential book, The Mis-Education of The Negro. Carter G.Woodson was born on December 19, 1875, and died on April 3, 1950.
